History

Al-Ibrahim Eye Hospital (IEH) was originally established as Isra Eye Hospital, in September 1990 in the Community Center of Memon Goth, Malir, Karachi. It was later shifted to the Rural Health Center, Old Thana, Malir. In January 2002 structured Residency Training Program was launched as the hospital was raised to the status of Isra Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology. The hospital is supported, operated and managed by Isra Islamic Foundation. It gets donations from local philanthropic organization and individuals and from Al-Ibrahim Foundation Riyadh in the past and Al-Basar Foundation Damam at present.


Goals
(1) Plans for providing quality eye care and prevention of diseases.

(2) Develop manpower at all levels including paramedicals, specialists and sub-specialists in the fields of ophthalmology

(3) Providing logistic and technical support to out reach eye services commonly known as Eye Camps and establishing peripheral eye clinics for rural areas.

(4) Conducting research, and finally

(5) Aiming for self-supporting auto-growth mechanism.


Facilities
The hospital is a 60 bed facility spread over a floor area of 55,000 Sq Ft and is fully equipped for the management of all lacrimal, lid, anterior and posterior segment diseases. Besides this, residential accommodation is available on the campus for house officers and technicians. Some medical and paramedical staff resides on the campus.


Out-Patient Department
It has 12 examination rooms fully equipped with slit lamp microscope, direct & indirect ophthalmoscope along with teaching aids. All patients are registered and their record is maintained.


State of the art equipment
All the equipment for diagnosis and treatment with laser is available in the Out-Patient Department (OPD) that include:

Argon Laser: Treatment of retinal diseases related to diabetes, high blood pressure and other causes.

Nidek Yag Laser: Powerful Laser machine to break membranes & tissues.

Fluorescein Angiography: Detection of obstruction and leakage of blood vessels in eye.

Perimetry: Measurement of Visual Fields by computer.

Auto-Refractor: Computerized vision-check and determination of refractive power of the eye.

Computerized Keratometer: Measurement of the curvature of the cornea.

Ultrasound A & B Scan: Evaluate and diagnose the eye disease and is used for measurement of the IOL power.


Operation Theaters
In-patient department is supported by four suites of operation theaters, recovery area, surgeon’s lounge wash areas, and other support facilities for sterilization, store, etc. The operation theater is equipped with state-of- the-art equipment including phacodemulsification and vitrectomy machines supported with endolaser.


Services
The hospital is distinguished by its high quality tertiary level care at subspecialty level including vitreo-retinal surgery. All services are provided free of charge except for cataract and vitreo-retinal surgery, which are done at nominal charges (to bear the cost of consumeables).

In addition to Karachi and its suburbs, the Hospital provides services to the rural population of districts of Dadu, Thatta in particular, as well as far-flung areas of Sindh in general.

The hospital has provided free examination and medical treatment to more than 480,000 and surgical treatment (restoration of Vision) to approximately 27,000 people. The daily OPD attendance, on the average is approximately 300, and more than 400 operations are carried out every month. A graphic presentation shows the statistics of OPD & Surgery from 1990-2002.


Employment & Budget
The hospital has provided employment to some 150 persons including forty-five doctors. The yearly budget of the hospital is around Rs. 26 million, out of which Rs. 6 million are generated through service charges, and the rest is raised through donations from philanthropic organizations and individuals. Education & Training

The Lecture Room: A fully carpeted air-conditioned lecture room for 20 students is available. The room is equipped with over head and slide projectors, multimedia projectors, and audio-visual console and playback / recorder. A small library stocked with latest editions of books, videotapes and multimedia resources is also available . Expansion of space for teaching and learning is underway.


Ophthalmic Technician Training Program
Isra / IEH have conducted ophthalmic technician training programs in co-operation with Isra University and is recognized by the Sindh Medical Faculty. Nearly than 170 have graduated through this programme since its inception.



Al-Ibrahim Eye Hospital Kunri

Location
This hospital is located at Kunri, in district Tharparkar, which serves as gateway to the desert area of the province of Sindh.


Facilities & Services
This is a 10 bedded hospital with fully equipped examination room and an operation theater. The Hospital provides high quality secondary level care. Its catchments extends to the remote area of desert of Thar. It provides surgical care for common blinding conditions like cataract and glaucoma. The Hospital has provided medical treatment to over 44000 patients and surgical treatment (restoration of vision) to approximately 1600 people.


Employment & Budget
The Hospital employs 5 persons including one eye surgeon. The yearly budget of the hospital is around Rs.850,000 out of which Rs.180,000 are generated through service charges and the rest is contributed by the philanthropists.



Al-Ibrahim Eye Hospital Kharan

Location

This Hospital is located at Kharan, which is five hours drive from Quetta, Baluchistan.


Facilities & Services
This 10 bedded hospital has a fully equipped examination room and an operation theater. It provides high quality secondary level surgical care for common blinding conditions like cataract and glaucoma to the people living in the surroundings and remote areas of Baluchistan. The hospital has provided medical treatment to over 20,000 and Surgical treatment (restoration of vision) to approximately 1400 persons.


Employment & Budget
The Hospital employs 5 persons including eye surgeon. The yearly budget of the hospital is around Rs.900,000, out of which Rs.100,000 is generated through service charges and the rest is contributed by the philanthropists.
