He was the first Dean of Faculty of Medicine and Allied Medical Sciences of Isra University. He started the Faculty in 1996 and remained in office till 1999.

He graduated from Liaquat Medical College in 1968. In 1973 he was supported by British Postgraduate Medical Federation and in 1974 obtained Diploma in Anesthesia (DA) from Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) and Royal College of Physicians (RCP). Later in 1977 he received Fellowship in Anesthesia and Intensive Care (FA) from Royal College of Ireland. He is member of several professional associations including American Heart Association.

He worked with the Iranian Oil Company as intensivist in Ahwaz, Iran and then joined King Saud University as Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesia where he was promoted to ranks of Associate and Professor in due course of time. Prof. Channa is one of the pioneers of the fellowship programs in Anesthesia in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in cooperation with RCS London and later RCS Ireland. In 1982 Countess of Snowdown cited him for his outstanding work. He is honored every year as the best teacher in the residency program of King Saud Fellowship.

He has published more than forty research papers in refreed journals and written more than ten editorials. He is author of many booklets and has contributed chapters to books on policy and procedures to be followed in operating rooms and intensive care units. He is invited as guest speaker in almost all the international symposia held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

His fields of interest are teaching at postgraduate level in the areas of critical care medicine, anesthesia in pediatric orthopedics with congenital anomalies, and management of high-risk geriatrics patients particularly with urology complications and those in need of major general surgery. His research findings in area of medical illnesses in pilgrims, particularly heat illnesses, genetics, and intensive care have been incorporated by well known books on intensive care world wide. He is reviewer of scientific journals and editor of a newsletter of Association of Anesthesia of Saudi Arabia for the last 13 years. He is a founding member of Isra Islamic Foundation.
